Pregnancy in Portugal: what is free, what expires

The tests the public system covers, the windows that do not come back, and the deadlines that cost money if you miss them. With the official source under each one.

essentials — Portugal

The deadlines we have verified, and what this country does differently. Not the full picture.

We are not a local edition: we say that a thing exists and that it has a date, in the words you will need at the counter — then we send you to the body that decides.

What is different in Portugal

  • First ultrasound (dating scan) — Between weeks 11 and 13
  • Anomaly (anatomy) scan — Between weeks 20 and 22
  • Glucose curve (75 g OGTT) — Fasting glucose at the first visit, then 75 g PTGO at weeks 24-28
  • Growth ultrasound — Between weeks 30 and 32
  • GBS vaginal-rectal swab — Between weeks 35 and 37

The father's 28 days, within six weeks

In Portugal the father's leave is compulsory and must be taken within 42 days of the birth. It cannot be moved or recovered. Beware of what circulates: the reform the press reported was voted down in Parliament in June 2026, so the current rules still stand.

What we have not checked: This entry rests on a reform being voted down in June 2026. We have not checked whether it has been tabled again since: before relying on the dates, look at the Segurança Social page.

What we do not know yet

General information, not legal or medical advice. Rules change: the date next to each source is the day a person last re-read it. For your own case, the body named on the page is the one that answers.

In the app the same deadlines arrive as a reminder, counted from your own due date.
