Week 37: you're full term

week 374 min read

Technically you're "full term" from today: if the baby were born now, it's considered fully developed. Average birth is around 40 weeks, but can happen any time from here.

Signs to watch for

  • Mucous plug detaching: thick mucus, sometimes with pink streaks
  • Regular contractions: abdominal pain repeating at intervals (every 5-10 min) for more than an hour
  • Water breaking: clear fluid, sometimes a gush, sometimes a trickle
  • Rhythmic lower back pain

Have ready

  • Hospital bag (for you and baby)
  • Documents (records, tests, birth plan if any)
  • Car with full tank and car seat already installed
  • Useful numbers: OB-GYN, midwife, hospital

When to go

Classic guidelines: every 5 min, 1-minute pain, for more than 1 hour. But if you feel it's time, go. You know better than anyone what your body is feeling.

General information, not medical advice. Every decision about your health and your baby's belongs to your midwife or doctor — and if it's urgent, to your emergency number.
