Cured meats

Cured raw ham (prosciutto crudo)

In pregnancy: Only if… While breastfeeding: Safe

Rare, but serious if it happens

What makes it safe

Cook it in a pan for a few minutes

Why

Cured but raw — high toxoplasmosis risk if you are not already immune. Avoid during pregnancy even if long-aged. It becomes safe if cooked in a pan for a few minutes.

It changes after the birth

You can eat this again while breastfeeding: the pregnancy-specific risks (listeria, toxoplasmosis, salmonella) no longer apply after birth. Keep normal food hygiene.

Instead

  • Cooked ham
  • Cured ham cooked in the pan
  • Roast turkey
