Cured meats

Guanciale (cured pork jowl)

In pregnancy: Only if… While breastfeeding: Safe

Rare, but serious if it happens

What makes it safe

Always cooked in a pan

Why

Raw-cured: toxoplasmosis. Always cook in a pan. Well-cooked it is safe.

It changes after the birth

You can eat this again while breastfeeding: the pregnancy-specific risks (listeria, toxoplasmosis, salmonella) no longer apply after birth. Keep normal food hygiene.

Instead

  • Guanciale crisped in the pan
  • Well-crisped pancetta
  • Cooked ham
