Meat

Liver / Offal

In pregnancy: Never While breastfeeding: Never

It builds up: that is why it is avoided entirely

Why

Very high in preformed vitamin A (retinol): a single portion can go well past the 3000 micrograms a day that should not be exceeded, and an excess can cause fetal malformations. Avoid it throughout pregnancy.

Instead

  • Lean meat (beef, chicken, turkey)
  • Oily fish
